The Blue Owl

Lotta Geffenblad

Stenberg and Granlund are two friends living in the vast forest at the foot of the mountains. They spend their days wandering together, drinking freshly brewed coffee, and eating delicious mushrooms sautéed in butter. Afterward, they sit and watch the sunset. But one day, something unexpected happens! Stenberg dies. Granlund is left all alone—until a giant, blue owl perches in the valley where he lives. Granlund ponders and ponders what this could possibly mean...

With The Blue Owl, Lotta Geffenblad has created a shimmering blue fairy tale about the essence of grief and friendship for all ages.

Selected for dPictus' "100 Outstanding Picture Books" list of 2024.

Author

Lotta Geffenblad

Lotta Geffenblad is a Swedish illustrator, children's book author, animator, and designer. Her work, both as a writer-illustrator of her own books and as an illustrator bringing other authors' stories to life, offers a narrative with emotional depth that captures a child’s perspective and enriches the imagination. In her creations, she combines analog techniques (mixed media, collage) with digital methods.

Her works have been translated into many languages. This year, she has been nominated for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA), considered one of the most prestigious awards in children's and youth literature. This award, presented by the Swedish government, is given to authors and illustrators who produce high-quality literature for children and young people, as well as to individuals and organizations that make lasting contributions to children's reading culture.
